I took a class by Diane Hill last year that was really insightful on the use of gouache for Chinoiserie decoration, she said I could paint almost anything in nature with the meyhods we learned and it sent me on a mini quest to paint people’s dogs. I used to think pet portraits were boring, but they really are wonderful subjects.

My old history teacher from middle school gifted me with a bunch of canvas and oil paints and a new beautiful easel. I had not done an oil painting in 10 years. Wow! 😲 I was so intimidated but so moved and honored by his gift I had to try.
I dedicated this project to the girls at our local boba shop and the amazing work God has done in and through them.
The materials are finally beginning to make sense to me. The first few times I used rice paper, I felt like I was not meant to create art with it. However, after attending my first Sumi-e Society conference, I was able to better grasp how to balance the amount of water I was using in my brush. I also discovered that there are so many different kinds of rice paper!
